Jasprit Bumrah is lucky to play under the captaincy of the three best captains that India has produced. If MS Dhoni polished him by instilling intricacies of the game, it is Virat Kohli who motivated him to further love his profession while Rohit Sharma gave him the freedom to play responsibly. He said this while speaking in an interview with The Indian Express.
Jasprit Bumrah is 30 and has to his credit 36 Tests where he has given some noteworthy performances. He has a great appetite for learning new skills and he admitted to gaining a lot from different captains.
His reactions for the three captains that he worked under
Rohit Sharma
Jasprit says Rohit always welcomes feedback and subsequently builds on a constructive phase from there. He said
“Rohit is one of the few captains who has empathy towards bowlers, despite being a batsman. He understands players’ emotions and knows what a player is going through. Rohit is not rigid, he is open to feedback”
M.S Dhoni
Bumrah also talks about how he felt while playing under the captaincy of Dhoni. The ‘game-changer’ phase for him was his ideology that he could do and that helped him immensely. Bumrah’s debut match in Sydney under the leadership of Dhoni was way back in 2016.
“MS (Dhoni) gave me a lot of security, quickly,” he said, suggesting that it helped him find his feet in the international arena. “He has a lot of faith in his instinct, and doesn’t believe in a lot of planning.”
Virat Kohli
His reaction to Kohli is beautiful too. He realized that ‘fitness’ is very important and he learned this professionally from him, as he has his ways of leading the team. He now looks after the match with a completely different view.
“Virat is energy-driven, passionate, wears his heart on his sleeve,” said Bumrah. “He pushed us in terms of fitness and changed the narrative that way. Now Virat is not the captain, but he is still a leader. Captaincy is a post, but a team is run by 11 people.”
