Rishabh Pant won’t be the captain in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024. The wicketkeeper-batsman will be free from carrying any additional role while playing for Team B, led by Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is the only uncapped player.
Aakash Chopra said :
“Rishabh Pant is not a captain. He has been selected in Abhimanyu Easwaran’s team. He is playing under Abhimanyu Easwaran’s captaincy, which is absolutely okay. However, is Rishabh Pant not even a candidate for Test captaincy? I am a little surprised,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“I am not aligned with this personally because the best avatar of Rishabh Pant you have seen is as a Test cricketer. He is the only wicketkeeper in the history of Indian cricket who has scored centuries in South Africa, England, and Australia in Test matches.”
Shubman Gill will be the captain of Team A while Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shreyas Iyer will be captaining B, C, and D respectively.
Aakash Chopra was quite shocked given the traits that Rishabh Pant had to become a captain, but unfortunately, he wasn’t even deemed fit to be captaining the Test matches. This further surprised him as he aired his concern while speaking to a YouTube channel.
His proven stint as a Test Cricketer
Aakash Chopra has reasons to support his claim of Rishabh proving himself as a top-notch cricketer. His bat has done talking overseas in the most challenging situations as he scored centuries in England, and South Africa along with Australia in Test Matches. It makes him the only wicketkeeper-batsman in India who has scored centuries in those countries.
He further opined that Shubman Gill had a lucky journey since he has been given opportunities and there is a general vibe about him being an ‘obvious’ inclusion in the Indian cricket team.
Aakash eagerly waits to hear the reaction from the new head coach
He is also quite eager to understand the thought process of Gautam Gambhir with regards to Rishabh Pant and captaincy. He further quipped about how Rishabh didn’t play in the first two matches in the ODIs against Sri Lanka, but he also managed to find a place in the last game.
