Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill declared unfit for India’s T20Is after their poor Asia Cup 2025. Former India opener Kris Srikkanth didn’t hold back his criticism of both stars. India won the final against Pakistan by five wickets despite the duo’s struggles.

Tilak Varma played a match-winning knock of 69* runs. Kuldeep Yadav grabbed four crucial wickets to set up the victory for India. But questions arose about the captain and vice-captain’s form heading into bigger tournaments.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Batting Woes
Srikkanth called Yadav’s scores a “pin code” because they looked so random. The Indian captain managed only 72 runs throughout the Asia Cup 2025 tournament. His average dropped to just 18, which is terrible for a T20 specialist.
“Suryakumar Yadav let me down. His scores are like a PIN code these days. Both batting lineups had several pin codes, with Pakistan being much worse, of course. But yes, Surya’s form is very concerning, along with Shubman Gill,” Srikkanth said.
Yadav played well against Pakistan in the first match when he scored 47 runs not out. But that one innings couldn’t hide his overall poor form in other matches. Srikkanth questioned whether he deserves a spot in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Shubman Gill’s Disappointing Run
Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill declared unfit for India’s T20Is, as concerns grew after Gill’s numbers. He scored 127 runs across seven matches with an average of just 21.16. That’s way below what you expect from a vice-captain in this format.
“Shubman Gill doesn’t look very deadly in the T20 format. He is fantastic in Tests and ODIs. Though they made him the vice-captain, with the World Cup coming up, we have to see what they do with him. He wasn’t even in my team during the initial selection. But they made him the vice-captain as well,” he added.
Srikkanth said Gill didn’t even make his initial World Cup team selection list. He wondered why selectors gave Gill the vice-captaincy when his T20 record isn’t great. The former player thinks Gill needs more time to prove himself in T20s.

Srikkanth’s Reality Check on Team Selection
Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill declared unfit for India’s T20Is debate, which heated up after Srikkanth’s comments. He pointed out India has beaten weaker teams but might struggle against top sides. The team used just one specialist pacer in most Asia Cup 2025 matches.
Srikkanth believes this approach won’t work against elite teams in the World Cup.
