Cricket Australia unveiled their 15-man preliminary squad with some interesting picks. Cooper Connolly gets his breakthrough moment after brilliant BBL performances. The Australia squad for T20 World Cup 2026 balances youth with proven champions.

Connolly has played only six T20Is so far. But his recent form in the Big Bash League speaks volumes. He’s smashed 170 runs at a strike rate of 166.66 this season.
His left-arm spin adds valuable options alongside Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell. That all-round ability makes him perfect for subcontinental conditions.
Injury Clouds Hang Over Stars
Pat Cummins’ name appears in the Australia squad despite fitness doubts. His back issues limited him during the Ashes series badly. A late-January scan will decide his T20 World Cup 2026 fate.
Head coach Andrew McDonald wants Cummins available for the Super Eights, at a minimum. That’s the compromise they’re working toward right now. His leadership and experience matter enormously for this side.
Josh Hazlewood missed the entire Ashes series with hamstring and Achilles problems. Tim David’s BBL season ended early with a hamstring injury too. Both players need a full recovery before joining the team.
Surprising Names Missing
Ben Dwarshuis got dropped despite strong performances in the West Indies recently. The left-arm seamer also bowled well in South Africa earlier. A calf injury against New Zealand hurt his chances though.
Mitchell Starc retired from T20Is already and Spencer Johnson is injured. That leaves the team without any left-arm pace option currently. Dwarshuis or Sean Abbott could get called up later.
Mitchell Owen’s omission surprised many cricket watchers genuinely. He started brilliantly in the West Indies with scores of 50, 36, and 37. But his form collapsed completely after that promising start.
Squad Composition Raises Questions
This team includes no backup wicketkeeper at all. That’s a risky call by national selector George Bailey. Josh Inglis becomes the only keeping option available now.
Glenn Maxwell could keep wickets in emergencies theoretically. But that’s not ideal for the T20 World Cup 2026 honestly. Alex Carey and Josh Philippe got overlooked for batting depth.
Xavier Bartlett grabbed the final pace-bowling spot. Bailey mentioned the players list remains flexible until early February. Changes can happen if injuries strike again.
Australia Squad:
Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
Tournament Preparations
Australia starts their campaign on February 11 against Ireland. The match happens in Sri Lanka as per the schedule. Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Oman are their other group opponents.
Late January brings warm-up T20Is in Pakistan for match practice. A separate team will handle those preparatory games. The T20 World Cup 2026 needs the team to fire on all cylinders.
