The BCB removes 11 directors from the board for missing three or more consecutive meetings as required by the board’s constitution. Among those dismissed are former president Nazmul Hassan and BPL chairman Sheikh Sohel.
Other removed directors include Manzur Kader, AJM Nasir Uddin, Anwarul Islam, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, Ismail Haider Mallick, Tanvir Ahmed, Obeid Nizam, Gazi Golam Murtoza, and Nazib Ahmed.
Alongside these 11 the BCB also accepted resignations from three directors: Naimur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud, and Enayet Hossain Siraj.
Following the change in government on August 5 after a student-led uprising, these directors have been notably absent from BCB activities.
Many have direct or indirect links to the Awami League: Nazmul was previously the sports minister, Shafiul was an Awami League MP, and Nasir a former Chattogram mayor. Sohel and Nazib are relatives of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and Mallick was a close ally of Nazmul.
Prior to the government change, the BCB had 25 directors, but following the departure of these 14 (one of whom had passed away), only 10 directors now remain.
The BCB has also created a committee led by director Nazmul Abedeen to review and propose updates to the board’s constitution.
According to a press release, “the committee will be responsible for evaluating the current BCB constitution, identifying areas for improvement, and recommending amendments that align with BCB’s strategic goals and evolving needs.”
Two weeks after an interim government took office on August 8, the BCB directors elected former Bangladesh captain Faruque Ahmed as president, while renowned coach Nazmul Abedeen also joined as a director. They replaced Jalal Yunus, who resigned, and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam, who was removed.
