No retirement yet! BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirms that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still very much in the frame for India’s ODI team.

The two legends may have stepped away from Tests—but don’t count them out of the 50-over format just yet.

    What’s the Big Update?

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla has given a much-needed update on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODI cricket.

After the Champions Trophy 2025 win and their emotional exit from Tests earlier this year, many believed the two icons might retire from ODIs as well.

But Shukla’s message is loud and clear:

“The good thing is they are not saying no. They are available for ODI cricket.”

#WATCH | London, UK | BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla says, "…We are all feeling the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The decision to retire made by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was their own. It is the policy of BCCI that we never tell any player to retire…We will… pic.twitter.com/4ShzHNG5W3

That means — as of now — neither Rohit nor Virat is planning to walk away from the format they’ve dominated for over a decade.

    What About the Champions Trophy?

India recently won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, held in Pakistan, where Rohit and Virat played key roles throughout the tournament. With that massive high, fans assumed the two might end their ODI careers on a winning note.

But BCCI says otherwise — they’re still in contention, and selectors will take a call based on form, fitness, and team balance going forward.

    No Forced Retirements, Says BCCI

Rajeev Shukla also clarified that BCCI has no policy to push players into retirement:

“It was their own decision to retire from Tests. We don’t force players to retire. They decide when they feel the time is right.”

So, if you’re a fan of Rohit’s fearless captaincy or Kohli’s classic cover drives — good news: you might see more of them in blue.

Eyes on 2027 ODI World Cup

Shukla also revealed that both players are targeting inclusion in the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup squad. While their test-era has concluded, their focus now shifts entirely to the 50-over format.

    Fans React

Cricket lovers across India are thrilled:

“One more World Cup with these two legends? Yes please!”
“Kohli and Rohit still have so much to offer. Let them play as long as they want!”

On social media, #RohitSharma and #ViratKohli started trending soon after the update, showing just how much love and excitement fans still have for the duo.
