Afghanistan cricket just got a new leader! Ibrahim Zadran named Afghanistan’s T20I Captain by the cricket board today. The opening batter replaces Rashid Khan in this crucial role.

This major change comes after Afghanistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. They failed to reach the Super Eights stage recently. The board decided fresh leadership was needed immediately.
Why Ibrahim Zadran Got the Captaincy
Ibrahim Zadran served as vice-captain under Rashid Khan previously. He knows the team dynamics and player strengths well. His promotion makes sense given his leadership experience already.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board announced squads on March 5. They’re preparing for a white-ball series against Sri Lanka. The matches will happen in the UAE soon across different venues.
Rashid Khan remains in the T20I squad still. He just won’t lead the team anymore. Afghanistan’s T20I captain’s role shifts to younger shoulders completely.
Squad Changes and Player Returns
Several big names got dropped from both squads surprisingly. Fazalhaq Farooqi, Gulbadin Naib, and Mohammad Ishaq all miss out. They played in the recent World Cup too.
New faces enter the setup with fresh energy. Wicket-keeper Noor Rahman returns to the T20I squad. Left-arm spinner Sharafuddin Ashraf also comes back in.
Fareed Ahmad, the left-arm pacer, rejoins the team. Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi gets his maiden ODI call-up. He impressed during the T20 World Cup appearances.
Hashmatullah Shahidi continues leading the ODI team forward. Rahmat Shah serves as his vice-captain there. The board keeps ODI leadership unchanged currently.

Series Details and Regional Concerns
The series happens in Sharjah and Dubai during March. T20Is are scheduled for March 13, 15, and 17. ODIs follow on March 20, 22, and 25.
However, regional tensions create some uncertainty about venues. The Gulf region faces security concerns due to conflicts. ACB monitors the situation closely every day.
They coordinate with the Emirates Cricket Board and local authorities. The board wants to proceed as planned currently. But they might adjust venues or dates if needed.
Ibrahim Zadran faces a big test as Afghanistan’s T20I Captain. Can he lead the team better than before?
