Something big is brewing in world cricket right now. The ICC has put the wheels in motion for the T20 World Cup 2028. Australia and New Zealand are getting the call and honestly, it could not be a better fit.

ICC Starts Venue Selection – Here Is What We Know So Far
So the ICC starts venue selection by formally reaching out to potential host cities. Ten venues will be picked across both countries combined. We should know the full list sometime before 2026 wraps up.
The tournament itself runs in October and November of 2028. 20 nations, 55 matches, one champion – the format is massive. Group stage, Super Eights, two semi-finals, and then the final to settle it all.
Australia ran the 2022 edition and those crowds were something else. England beat Pakistan in that Melbourne final. MCG, SCG, WACA – those grounds will almost certainly be back in the mix.
“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2028 will be the biggest cricket event ever staged in the southern hemisphere. Australia and New Zealand will host the best players and teams in the world, including arguably the hottest property in sport, reigning champions India,” 2028 ICC T20 World Cup CEO, Joel Morrison said.
“Cricket World Cups are mega events and they deliver significant social, economic and promotional benefits to host cities. Key to maximising these outcomes and executing a world class event is cricket’s commitment to a partnership approach with governments, venues, commercial and broadcast partners and local communities.“We look forward to working with prospective partners through this process as we seek to unite and inspire fans globally through a spectacular festival of cricket that extends its benefits far beyond the cricket field,” he added.
Teams Already Through to T20 World Cup 2028
Several sides have already sorted out their qualifications. Australia and New Zealand are in as hosts, simple as that. England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe made their spots through the 2026 Super Eights.
Bangladesh, Ireland, and Afghanistan are also confirmed through rankings. Eight more teams still need to fight through regional qualifying. So the road to 2028 is very much still alive for plenty of nations.
India comes in as back-to-back defending champions which adds real weight. They beat New Zealand by 96 runs in that 2026 Ahmedabad final. Defending that title on foreign soil is a totally new task overall.
What Hosting This Tournament Actually Means
When ICC starts venue selection, it is never just about picking pretty grounds. Host cities get real investment, tourism, and global attention for weeks. The ICC is tying in governments, local communities, and commercial partners from the very start.
New Zealand has not hosted a men’s ICC event since 2015. For both countries this is genuinely a decade-defining chance. If you are a cricket fan living in Australia or New Zealand, 2028 just became very good.
