Jasprit Bumrah turned down India’s Test captain offer last week. The fast bowler wants Shubman Gill to lead the team. Bumrah thinks young players need chances to grow as leaders.

BCCI offered Bumrah the captain role after Rohit Sharma retired. However, the pacer declined this important position respectfully yesterday. He prefers helping Gill from the side instead of leading.
Bumrah Explains His Decision to Support Gill
The star bowler believes Gill deserves this leadership opportunity now. Bumrah wants to guide the new captain whenever needed. He thinks experienced players should help young captains learn.
“In my experience, you have to give freedom, and you have to be there for the player. I am there for him whenever he needs me, in whatever capacity. I don’t want to jump in, and if I see something, I would give a quiet word.” Bumrah said.
The fast bowler knows captaincy brings extra pressure on players. He chose to focus on his bowling rather than leadership.

Bumrah worried about managing his workload as captain and bowler. Fast bowlers face more injury risks than other cricket players. He wants to play for India for many more years.
Working Well with Coach Gambhir
Bumrah praised head coach Gautam Gambhir’s coaching methods recently. The coach talks to each player separately about their problems. This personal approach helps players feel more comfortable with changes.
“He is a person who is very individualistic. He will have one-on-one chats with the person with whom he feels that he is supposed to interfere. You know, when people are going in one direction and he has some thoughts about that.” Bumrah said.
Gambhir stays calm during tough situations on the cricket field. The coach understands that different players need different types of help. Bumrah appreciates this individual attention from his coach very much.
