Nicholas Pooran has walked away from West Indies cricket. The left-hander made his announcement via social media. At just 29, he’s choosing franchise cricket over country duty.

This decision hits West Indies cricket hard right now. They lose their most reliable middle-order batsman before crucial tournaments. Pooran averaged over 35 in T20 internationals during his career.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Caribbean cricket officials. Their T20 World Cup campaign is just eight months away. Pooran was expected to lead the batting charge there.

International Numbers Tell the Story
Pooran leaves behind solid statistics from his nine-year international stint. He played 61 ODIs and managed 106 T20I appearances overall. His career total crossed 4,000 runs across both formats.
The wicketkeeper’s last ODI came against England in July 2023. His final T20I appearance happened just last December against Australia. Both series showed he still had plenty to offer.
Captaining West Indies gave Pooran his proudest cricket moments recently. He led the team through some tough tours overseas. His leadership skills were developing nicely before this retirement decision.
His Instagram post thanked everyone who supported his international journey. Pooran mentioned how much he loved representing his region. But he admits this choice wasn’t easy to make.
Young Caribbean cricketers looked up to Pooran as their role model. He showed them how to succeed at the highest level. Now they’ll have to find new inspiration elsewhere.
IPL Money Changes Everything
Lucknow Super Giants paid Pooran ₹21 crore for IPL 2025. This massive contract made him extremely wealthy almost overnight. He scored 524 runs to justify that huge price tag.
Franchise cricket offers financial security that international cricket simply cannot match. Players earn more in two months than annual national contracts. The math makes perfect sense from their perspective.

Travel is easier in T20 leagues compared to international tours. Players face less pressure when they are not constantly carrying national expectations. Their bodies also get more rest between tournaments.
Cricket’s New Reality: Money Beats Patriotism These Days
Heinrich Klaasen recently made the same choice as Pooran did. The South African quit international cricket to focus on leagues. More players will probably follow this path soon enough.
Cricket boards cannot compete with the salaries being offered by franchises now. Their central contracts look tiny compared to T20 deals. This creates impossible situations for national team selectors.
