The Pakistan Cricket Board just dropped a bombshell announcement recently. PSL 2026 will copy IPL-style auction system starting from the 11th season. The old draft format is officially gone after nearly a decade!

The Pakistan Super League has used the draft system since 2016. That’s when the tournament first started in Pakistan. Now they’re switching things up completely for better results.
Salman Naseer, the PSL chief executive, explained why this change matters. The auction brings more transparency to player selections apparently. It also helps create a better balance among competing teams.
Money Matters and New Rules
Each PSL franchise gets a bigger budget to work with now. The salary purse jumped from USD 1.3 million to USD 1.6 million. That’s extra cash for teams to spend on quality players.
The retention rules have changed dramatically for PSL 2026 too. Teams can now keep only four players from their previous squad. Each category allows just one retention per team.
Things were way different under the old system honestly. Franchises could retain eight players plus a mentor and brand ambassador. They also had a right-to-match option for a ninth player during drafts.
Fresh Start for New Franchises
Hyderabad and Sialkot join as brand new PSL teams this season. Both franchises get to pick four players before the auction begins. This gives them a decent base to build their squads around.
Every team can make one direct overseas signing too. The player must not have played in PSL season 10 though. That’s an interesting rule to bring fresh international talent in.
The IPL influence on PSL 2026 is clear in these new structures. The Indian Premier League’s auction system has worked brilliantly for years. PCB obviously studied what makes IPL so successful and popular.
Tournament Timeline and Venues
PSL 2026 will copy IPL-style auction to kick off its 11th season properly. The tournament starts on March 26 with matches across Pakistan. Faisalabad becomes a new venue added to the existing list.
Players should earn better money under this new auction format. Competitive bidding often pushes prices higher than fixed draft amounts. That’s good news for cricketers looking to cash in!
