Rajeev Shukla issues an emergency statement defending food safety at Hotel Landmark in Kanpur. Several Australia A players fell sick with stomach infections during their India tour. Four players, including captain Jack Edwards, were affected, while one needed hospital treatment badly.

Henry Thornton was hospitalised after the Australia A players health crisis worsened during matches. The BCCI Vice-President jumped in quickly to address concerns about food quality there. Shukla strongly defended the hotel facilities and meal arrangements provided to visiting teams.
BCCI’s Defence of Food Standards
Rajeev Shukla issues an emergency statement saying the hotel food was completely safe for players. He argued that if food was contaminated, both Indian and Australian players would’ve fallen sick together. Only Australian players were affected, which suggests an infection from somewhere else entirely.
“If there had been an issue with the food, all players, including the Indian players, would have fallen sick. It must have been something else. They are being fed food from one of the finest hotels, Hotel Landmark; the food is good, and everyone is eating the same. Since a few players have fallen ill, they may have contracted an infection, and we are handling it,” Shukla said.
The Food Department collected samples from the hotel kitchen for proper testing immediately. These tests will confirm whether food safety standards were properly maintained at that facility. Shukla believes the illness came from an infection unrelated to hotel meals served.

Logistical Challenges in Kanpur
Rajeev Shukla issues an emergency statement explaining accommodation problems faced in Kanpur for tours. He admitted that better hotel facilities weren’t available in that city for international teams. The BCCI always arranges player accommodations and food for official international series matches only.
Shukla compared this with IPL, where franchises handle all player accommodation and meals themselves. The Australia A players health crisis highlighted infrastructure gaps in some Indian cities, unfortunately.
