Rohit Sharma’s captaincy can risk team culture, according to a new BCCI report today. The board replaced Rohit with Shubman Gill as ODI captain before the Australia series. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that this decision was necessary to maintain team stability.

The selectors worried about having Rohit lead in a format he plays sparingly now. His senior status and strong personality could create dressing room issues, they believed. According to board officials, having three different captains across formats was no longer practical.
Concerns About Leadership Dynamics
Rohit Sharma’s captaincy can risk team harmony because of his influential presence in the squad. Even without the captain’s armband, his opinions carry huge weight among players naturally. The BCCI feared this could undermine Gill’s authority during matches and team meetings.
“A player of Rohit’s stature in a leadership role would have meant he would get to drive his philosophy in the dressing room. But with him playing only in ODIs, a format which is played the least, it could have disturbed the team culture,” a BCCI source said.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir initially stayed quiet on selection matters at the start. But he started speaking up more after losses to New Zealand and Australia hurt. The board wants clear leadership without mixed signals from senior players constantly interfering.
“Gambhir had taken a back seat in Tests and ODIs in the first six months of his assignment, but the debacles against New Zealand and Australia prompted him to take charge more firmly,” he added.

Playing Under a New Captain
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play under Gill’s captaincy during the Australia ODIs. This marks a huge shift in Indian cricket’s power structure moving forward, definitely. The younger captain must handle two legends while establishing his own leadership style.
“It has been a collective effort by Gambhir and Agarkar. They understand that it will be tough for both Rohit and Kohli to be at their peak after two years, given that they are in their late 30s. They didn’t want to be caught off guard if suddenly Rohit or Kohli’s form dipped. It would have created chaos in the leadership group,” the BCCI source said.
Rohit Sharma’s captaincy can risk team culture if his form drops before the next World Cup. The selectors want to avoid chaos if either senior player struggles with age. This proactive move protects the team from future leadership battles potentially brewing there.
