Nobody saw this coming when India released their World Cup squad. Shubman Gill got axed completely despite being the vice-captain until the recent series. Jitesh Sharma also lost his place in the 15-member team.

BCCI dropped both players by leaving fans absolutely stunned across social media. Many people still can’t wrap their heads around Gill’s exclusion honestly.
Why Shubman Gill Lost His Spot
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar sat down with the media to explain this bombshell. He said India desperately needed a wicketkeeper who opens the batting. That’s why Ishan Kishan got picked instead of Gill pretty much. The team wanted someone who keeps wickets and bats in the top order.
“Their thoughts are… who’s going to bat at the top? Abhishek, obviously, has done what he has done over the last year. And we felt the keeper at the top at this point gives us a lot more solidity than anywhere else in the team to play different combinations.
“There are only 15 that we could have picked. Someone has to miss out. It’s him. It’s not because he’s not a good player. Again, Jitesh hasn’t done too much wrong. These are the combinations that the team management is looking for,” Agarkar said.
Suryakumar Yadav defended the call when reporters questioned him repeatedly about it. The captain insisted Gill’s batting form wasn’t bad or anything like that.
They just needed better balance throughout the entire lineup he explained. A keeper-batsman opening gives way more options during tight game situations.
“It’s not about Gill’s form. We wanted to have a keeper at the top,” Suryakumar said.
Gill held the vice-captaincy since the Asia Cup started months ago. Getting dropped from the squad entirely stings way worse than just losing captaincy.
Jitesh Sharma Also Misses Out
Jitesh Sharma faced similar issues regarding his batting position. He plays as a finisher wicketkeeper in the lower order usually. India wanted an opening wicketkeeper instead for this World Cup campaign.
Agarkar made it clear that team combinations dictated these tough calls. Jitesh couldn’t fit into the specific role they needed right now. His finishing abilities didn’t match what selectors wanted from their keeper.
The Final 15-Member Squad
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Axar Patel (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (wk), Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan, Rinku Singh
Suryakumar Yadav takes charge as captain for defending India’s title. Big names like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Hardik Pandya made the cut. Jasprit Bumrah obviously got selected as the main pace weapon for bowling. Everyone knows their specific jobs for this tournament coming up soon.
India won the T20 World Cup 2024. Now they’re chasing another championship with this new squad composition decided. Selectors went for team balance instead of just picking famous names. That explains why someone like Gill sits home watching instead of playing.
