A new era has begun in India’s Test cricket! For the first time without veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Team India is preparing to tour England.
Before which, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar spoke on some important issues in a press conference in Mumbai.

In which he explained the reason for making Shubman Gill the captain and giving a chance to Karun Nair and Arshdeep Singh along with dropping Sarfaraz Khan and Mohammed Shami.
Why were Nair and Arshdeep selected?
Karun Nair has returned to the Test team after 8 years. Nair, who scored a triple century against England in 2016, scored 863 runs for Vidarbha in Ranji Trophy 2024-25. With the departure of Kohli and Rohit, there was a lack of experience in the middle order.
Agarkar said, “Nair’s experience will strengthen this young batting lineup.”
At the same time, Arshdeep Singh got a place in the Test squad for the first time. His left-arm swing bowling and county cricket experience for Kent in 2023 came in handy.
Agarkar said, “Arshdeep’s swing bowling and his record with the Dukes ball give us variety. Bumrah may not play the entire 5 Tests, so Arshdeep will play an important role.”
Why were Sarfaraz-Shami dropped?
Sarfaraz Khan scored two half-centuries on Test debut and a brilliant innings of 150 runs in Bengaluru. Still, he did not get a chance on the Australia tour.
Agarkar said, “Sometimes difficult decisions have to be taken. Nair’s experience and form weighed heavily on Sarfaraz.”
Sarfaraz has an average of 37.10, but the selectors chose the experienced Nair. On the other hand, Mohammed Shami has been struggling with injury since the 2023 World Cup. Despite playing the Champions Trophy and the IPL, his fitness is not ready for Test cricket.
Agarkar said, “Shami’s MRI showed some problem. The medical team advised that he is not fit for this series.”
25-year-old Shubman Gill is India’s new Test captain. His batting and enthusiasm make him perfect for this role.
Agarkar said, “Gill is a strong contender for batting at number 4, but this decision will be taken by Gill and coach Gambhir.”
Jasprit Bumrah was not given the burden of captaincy, as his fitness is a priority.
Agarkar said, “After Bumrah’s back injury, the medical team advised that he may not play all 5 Tests.”
Sai Sudharsan was selected not for IPL form, but for centuries against England and Australia.
Agarkar said, “Sudarshan has the potential to succeed at the Test level. Coach Gambhir likes his technique and temperament.”
Probable XI for the first Test Squad
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul will open, Sai Sudarshan No. 3, Gill No. 4, then Rishabh Pant, Karun Nair and Ravindra Jadeja.
The bowling can include Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep, and Shardul Thakur or Kuldeep Yadav. One of Thakur or Kuldeep will be selected according to the pitch.
