Mohammed Shami, one of the best pace bowler in India, will be participating in Border-Gavaskar Trophy which is scheduled later this year. Jay Shah told the media that Shami has cleared NCA (National Cricket Academy)’s final fitness testing upon his recovery from a toe injury since last November’s World Cup finals.
Shami got this ankle injury from the 2019 ODI World Cup and currently undergoing rehabilitation at NCA Bengaluru. He has shown significant improvement lately as he started bowling again last month. He has started increasing his bowling sessions gradually without any pain, which is very encouraging for him to play competitive cricket again.
“Shami playing the Australia series or not is a matter of his fitness, and a decision will be taken after the NCA report,” Shah said in an interview with ANI.
This shows that his full recovery determines whether or not Shami takes part in the big tournament. Shami would be instrumental to India against Australia; he has picked 31 wickets at an average of 32.16 across eight Tests including two five-wicket hauls.
Shami’s ability to adapt to Australian pitches will be key for India’s bid to win back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on their home soil. Along with updates on Shami’s recovery, Shah confirmed that VVS Laxman will stay as the head of the NCA.
Laxman who took over in December 2021, has played a key role in helping players like Shami recover. His current contract runs out in September but he will continue in his position to ensure stability at the academy during this important time.
