Vinayak Shukla’s inspiring journey shows how dreams can come true with hard work. The young cricketer moved from Kanpur to Oman in 2021 to play cricket. His story proves that determination can help players achieve their goals.

Starting Cricket Dreams in Kanpur
Cricket was everything for young Vinayak Shukla and Kuldeep Yadav in Kanpur. These two boys spent endless hours at local grounds, hitting balls and dreaming. Nobody could have predicted their paths would split so dramatically years later.
Shukla watched other players get chances while he remained stuck waiting. Indian domestic cricket felt like a closed door for many talented boys. He made a tough choice – leave everything familiar and try somewhere else.
MS Dhoni’s success story from Jharkhand kept Shukla motivated during dark days. The wicketkeeper-captain proved that small-town cricketers could reach the top level. Shukla held onto this hope when rejection letters kept coming his way.
“As a wicketkeeper-batsman [batter], my inspiration has always been Mahendra Singh Dhoni — the way he finishes games and leads the team is unmatched. He is my guru,” Vinayak said.
Those childhood cricket sessions with Kuldeep now feel like golden memories. Both friends practiced together, competed with each other, and shared the same wild dreams. Today, they represent different nations, but their bond from Kanpur remains strong.
Building New Life in Oman
Vinayak Shukla works as a Data Operator to earn money for living. He balances his office job with regular cricket practice sessions daily. Many Oman players need regular jobs because cricket opportunities remain limited.
“It was a very difficult decision. I left Indian cricket in November 2021 and moved to Oman to pursue my dreams. I work as a Data Operator at National Metal Cans. Back in Kanpur, I started playing at local clubs like the PAC Cricket Ground, and then moved around different cities. But the problem was, I just wasn’t getting the opportunity to represent the state,” he added.
Shukla made his debut for Oman’s national cricket team in 2024. He scored 40 runs not out against Qatar in his first match. This unbeaten innings helped Oman win by 35 runs comfortably.
The journey from Kanpur to Oman taught him valuable life lessons about perseverance. Shukla had to adapt to new culture and different cricket systems. He learned basic Arabic to communicate with teammates better.
Dreams of Playing Against India
Vinayak Shukla’s inspiring journey reached a special moment during the Asia Cup matches. He got excited about the possibility of playing against his home country. Even though Oman exited early, he felt proud representing his adopted nation.
“Playing against India is going to be very special. I was playing in India once, and now I’m playing for Oman — I can’t ask for more. Facing players like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep, and Shubman Gill is huge for the Oman national cricket team as well as for me. I’m especially looking forward to meeting Kuldeep personally,” he said.
Shukla wants people to know that Kanpur has a rich cricket culture. Many talented players come from his hometown but need better opportunities. He encourages young cricketers to explore options beyond traditional domestic cricket.
