The Champions Trophy 2025 faces uncertainty after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided not to send its team to Pakistan. Cricket officials are working behind the scenes to persuade the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to agree to a hybrid model for hosting the tournament.
The event, set to take place in Pakistan has hit a roadblock due to India’s firm stance. The BCCI has made it clear that India will not play matches in Pakistan and is pushing for a hybrid hosting arrangement for the prestigious tournament.
Top cricket officials believe India’s participation is crucial for the success of the ICC’s 50-over tournament, given the massive fan following and financial impact, as reported by India Today. Pakistan has been informed of the revenue loss if they decide to pull out of the event.
The PCB has reportedly been urged to work on a hybrid hosting format. Meanwhile, the final tournament schedule is expected to be released soon as discussions are ongoing.
“We are still in discussions with the host and participating members on the Champions Trophy schedule. It should be out soon, likely in a couple of days or so,” said a source familiar with the matter.
India has not toured Pakistan for cricket since the 2008 Asia Cup and hasn’t played a bilateral series against them since 2012-13.
However, the two teams continue to meet in ICC and Asia Cup events. Despite this, India has made it clear that they will not play in Pakistan, even for multi-nation tournaments.
The PCB already hosted the 2023 Asia Cup using a hybrid model because India refused to travel. All of India’s matches including the final, were held in Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, Pakistan has participated in ICC events held in India, including the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“Pakistan’s respect is first and foremost. Rest, you will see what happens. Our stance is very clear; we have made it clear in the past,” Naqvi said.
He added, “Every other team that has qualified for the Champions Trophy is ready to come. No one has any concern.”
The Champions Trophy 2025, featuring the top eight teams, is scheduled for February and March. It is likely that India’s matches will be held in the UAE as part of the hybrid model.
