Shubman Gill did wonders in the first Test match between India and England on 20 June 2025 at Headingley ground in Leeds.
The newly appointed Test captain Gill spewed such fire from his bat that the England bowlers were blown away.

This 25-year-old star batsman created history with his first overseas (in SENA countries) Test century. This was his sixth Test century overall, and he became the fifth Indian to score a century on captaincy debut.
Gill scored 100 runs in 140 balls with 14 fours. Along with him, Yashasvi Jaiswal also scored a brilliant century, helping India put pressure on England by scoring 215/2 on the first day.
Gill thrashed bowlers like Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Ben Stokes. His innings showed a wonderful combination of aggression and understanding.
Captaincy pressure, answered with the bat
After the retirement of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Gill was under heavy pressure of captaincy. His record on foreign pitches was weak earlier, and many people were questioning his captaincy.
But Gill silenced everyone with his bat. His 129-run partnership with Yashasvi put India in a strong position. Even after Yashasvi was out, Gill showed a mix of patience and aggression and completed his century off Josh Tongue’s ball.
How was Yashasvi’s performance?
Yashasvi Jaiswal also created history in this match. He became the first batsman to score a century in his first Test in England and Australia.
He was bowled by Stokes after scoring 101 runs with 16 fours in 144 balls. His and Gill’s pair pushed England on the backfoot.
