Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was all praise for Shubman Gill’s outstanding performance on Day 2 of the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston.
Gill, who remained unbeaten overnight, continued his masterclass on the second day, eventually scoring a gritty and technically sound century that kept India firmly in the contest.

Shastri, speaking to the media, described Gill’s knock as “fantastic and very solid,” highlighting the young batter’s improved technique and mature approach at the crease.
“He looked absolutely fantastic. His defence was rock solid, and he played the ball late with great control. This is one of the best I’ve seen him bat in challenging English conditions,” Shastri said.
Gill’s Classy Century Turns the Game
Shastri emphasized that Gill’s shot selection and balance at the crease have significantly improved since his previous outings in England.
Shastri noted that Gill has worked hard on his defensive game, especially against the moving ball, which was a weakness during his last tour and he said also Gill’s innings, his second century in consecutive Tests after a sublime 147 at Headingley.
Today Shubman Gill, describing His unbeaten 114 on Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston.
“His top-hand control was brilliant. Earlier, he would push hard at deliveries, but now he’s letting the ball come to him. That’s what made the difference,” Shastri added.
Game changing Partnerships and Magnetic Impact
Gill’s innings was the backbone of India’s first innings. He built crucial partnerships:
- 66-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal
- Unbeaten 99-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja
These partnerships helped India recover from early setbacks and set up a strong position for the remainder of the Test. On Day 2, Gill continued to frustrate the England bowlers with his patience and precise shot-making.
Why Shubman Gill’s Knock Stood Out
- Technical Growth: His defence and patience have gone to the next level.
- Composure Under Pressure: His ability to bat time and absorb England’s disciplined bowling attack impressed Shastri.
- Maturity in Decision-Making: Unlike previous tours, Gill now waits for loose deliveries and doesn’t chase wide balls.
Shastri’s pointed out that Gill’s transformation from a flashy batter to a more composed run-accumulator is a big win for Indian cricket.
How India Look’s Forward On Day 2
With Gill anchoring the innings, India is well-positioned to post a formidable first-innings total. Ravi Shastri urged India to build on this solid foundation and aim for a score of 450+ to put pressure back on England.
The next day’s morning session will be crucial in defining the match’s direction. Both teams know that Gill’s wicket is now the key.
