Ind vs Eng 5th Test: “Are We Still in Colonial Era?”— Irfan Pathan Backs Gambhir After controversy with curator

The cricket world is buzzing — not because of a big six or a stunning wicket, but because of a heated moment between Gautam Gambhir and The Oval’s pitch curator

During India’s practice session at The Oval, Gambhir reportedly got into a heated argument with curator Lee Fortis, who instructed him to stay 2.5 meters away from the pitch.
This seemingly small directive sparked a larger debate, as such restrictions are rarely enforced so strictly on home team staff.

According to India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, Gambhir was simply inspecting the pitch — a routine task for coaches and captains — when he was unexpectedly pulled up for getting too close.

This treatment didn’t sit well with the Indian camp and even less so with fans and former players, many of whom viewed the move as unnecessary and disrespectful.

The reaction? Swift and sharp. Gambhir was accused of being too aggressive and disrespectful.

But here’s where things got interesting.

Irfan Pathan Hits Back — Loud and Clear

In cricket, it’s totally normal for coaches and captains to check out the pitch before a big match — it helps them plan better and pick the right team. But what really got people talking this time is the unequal treatment.

Irfan Pathan pointed out the obvious — “How come an England coach McCullum can stand on the pitch, but an Indian coach is told to stay away?” what he believes is a clear double standard.

“Are we still in the colonial era?” Pathan asked on social media and in interviews.
“When our players show passion, it’s called aggression. But when foreign players do the same thing, it’s labeled ‘competitive spirit’. Why the hypocrisy?”

So an English coach can walk onto the pitch to inspect it? but an Indian coach can’t? Are we still stuck in the colonial era?

    — Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) July 29, 2025

Pathan pointed out that over the years, players from England or Australia have confronted curators, umpires, or officials without facing nearly the same level of criticism. But when an Indian speaks up — it’s seen as crossing a line.

This isn’t just about one pitch or one heated moment. Pathan’s comments have touched a nerve because they echo something many Indian fans have felt for years — our players are judged differently on the global stage.

Even fans online chimed in, saying things like:

    • “If this was Stokes or Smith, it would’ve been called ‘mind games’.”
    • “Gambhir just asked for fairness. Why the outrage?

People are still split on the incident. Some feel Gambhir could’ve kept his cool and handled things a bit more calmly. Others believe he was absolutely right. Lee Fortis, the pitch curator saying to couching staff when Gambhir approached the pitch for a closer inspection. However, Fortis reportedly told him to stay 2.5 meters away from the surface— despite Gautam Gambhir said be fair on both sides.

    Gautam Gambhir was right!

He’s India’s head coach, not someone a groundsman can disrespect. In England, casual racism runs deep where even helpers often look down on Indians. Sometimes, it’s not about humility, it’s about putting them in their place.pic.twitter.com/vNYgLReUGb

But if there’s one thing most agree on, it’s this: Gambhir didn’t deserve the harsh media reaction that followed.

Whether or not you agree with how Gambhir handled things, Irfan Pathan’s powerful words have sparked a conversation the cricket world needs to have.

“All cricketers deserve to be treated equally,” Pathan said.
“It’s time we leave behind the colonial mindset — on and off the field.”
