After Win The Champion Trophy 2025 India’s Player Reaction

Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, has been declared the Player of the Match. Here’s what he has to say:
We’ve played some really good cricket through the tournament. To come out here having the result our way is a great feeling. Very very happy. (On his approach) It’s obviously not natural to me but it is something I really wanted to do and when you’re trying to do something different you need the backing of the team and the management. They were right through with me. In the ODI World Cup as well with Rahul (Dravid) bhai, this is what I spoke to him and he was very much okay with it and now Gauti bhai as well. It was all about getting that backing and it was something I really wanted to do.

I’ve played all these years in a different style but I wanted to try and see if we could play differently and get the results we were looking for. (On stepping out to the pacers) Having played here on a few occasions you understand the nature of the pitch, what it does upfront with the new ball. Using my feet is something I’ve been doing for a long time now. It’s just about being clear in your mind and I was very clear on how I wanted to execute in the first few overs. I’ve gotten out as well but I was clear.

As long as it serves the purpose of what we’re trying to do, I’m happy. It (batting depth) certainly helps. That’s why I’ve said before we wanted to bat as deep as possible. Having Jadeja coming in at 8 gives you the confidence to go hard against the new ball. If it comes off it comes off. If it doesn’t, so be it.

KL Rahul: I don’t think I can say this on camera, I was sh*****g myself. We had a couple of batters to come, but it was all about holding the composure. Happy to win this, happy to get over the line. I think I’ve batted in times like this in three out of the five times. The games given me good time, helped to do well in the time like this. Hard to put into words, just pure skill, the way we’ve all played cricket growing up, face a lot of challenges. We’ve had to face pressure from the time we held the bat. BCCI has given us opportunities, helped the players to groom.

Ravindra Jadeja: My batting number is such that I become a hero or a zero at times. The partnership between KL and Hardik was crucial. The wicket wasn’t easy but their partnership ensured the momentum changed. It means a lot to me when you play for India and win the Champions Trophy as part of the side. After playing cricket for so many years if you don’t win a big tournament, it hurts. But luckily we’ve won two big tournaments in the last two years.

Hardik Pandya: Obviously it’s an amazing to win an ICC title, especially Champions Trophy. I still remember the CT 2017, couldn’t get the job done but we’ve done well tonight, everybody contributed. That was calm and composed, he took his chances at the right point of time, this is what KL Rahul is, he has immense talent, he can hit the ball like anyone.

Shreyas Iyer: Feeling ecstatic to be honest. Hard to say it in words. My first ICC trophy. I’m kind of overwhelmed looking at everyone in the dressing room. The way we turned up in this tournament and progressed, it was amazing. I love to go under pressure whenever there is a challenge. I feel I thrive under pressure. I’ve got amazing starts without getting a big one but at the end of the day if I can contribute to the team’s victory, I’m immensely happy.

Varun Chakravarthy: [on earrings like Iyer] I do have, no I’ll get a new one. It was a sudden inclusion, didn’t expected to turn up like this, dream come true. The first innings, the spin was less, we had to stick to the stumps, be disciplined.

Kuldeep Yadav: Luckily (I didn’t have to bat). Credit goes to KL bhai and Jaddu bhai for finishing the game. Expectations are a lot when you play very good cricket. You go into the tournaments as favorites but I don’t believe in that tag. We’ve been playing very good cricket in the last few years. I want to dedicate this win on our behalf to our fans. It’s very tough to manage and it’s easy to say there are four spinners in a team. But it’s very difficult to manage four spinners on the field. The way Rohit bhai managed them was outstanding. Reading the batters, knowing who will bat at what point, who should bowl – it’s a lot of planning, not two or three days of planning. We should party and the whole of India will party today.

Shubman Gill: Felt amazing, for the most of the time, I was sitting back and enjoyed Rohit bhai’s batting. We kept talking, doesn’t matter what the scorecard is, we need to play till the end. Very satisfying, we missed out on the last time in 2023. Winning eight ODI‘s back to back, amazing feeling. Watching him on TV and then playing alongside him feels great. He gives inputs always and that’s phenomenal. New Zealand are consistent team, they come up with plans. Playing against them is always a challenge, be it batting, fielding or bowling. We saw that today, they made it hard towards the end.

Virat Kohli: It’s been amazing, we wanted to bounce back after the tough Australia tour, we wanted to win. Feels good to be part of the such young talent, we’re happy to help, try to make an impact whenever there’s a chance. These are the things, you look forward to situation under pressure. Teams stepped up different situation, everyone have put up hand at different times, such impactful knocks, spells. Only collective effort can win you titles. We’ve had great time as a team, amazing tournament.

As Shubman said, I try to speak to them as much as possible of how I’ve been able to play for so long. When you leave, you want to leave the place in a better position, that’s what you’re striving for. We have a squad to take on the world for the next 8 to 10 years. The game awareness has been great with all the players, we’re in good hands. We’ve always been in awe of what they can do with minimum resources they have, you know they come at you with set plans. Bowlers are accurate, they’re the most consistent team in the last two years, they believe themselves. Huge shout out to the them, they continue to display why they’re one of the top teams in the world.
