The excitement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is at its peak and a big news has surprised the fans. Gujarat Titans (GT) have signed Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis in place of their star batsman Jos Buttler.

The decision was taken after Buttler was called up to England for the white-ball series against the West Indies from May 29, which clashes with the IPL 2025 playoffs.
Buttler’s brilliance and his shortcomings
Jos Buttler has been the trump card for GT this season. He has scored 500 runs in 11 matches at an average of 71.42 and a strike rate of 163.93.
His explosive batting led GT to many victories and strengthened the playoff race. But the England Cricket Board (ECB) has called him for national duty. Butler’s absence is a big blow for GT in the playoffs.
Kusal Mendis: The New Storm
GT chose Kusal Mendis, an experienced Sri Lankan batsman, in place of Butler. Mendis recently scored 143 runs in 5 innings at an average of 35.75 and a strike rate of 168.23 for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
With his form, GT hopes that he will further strengthen the batting in the playoffs. Mendis has scored 4700+ runs in his T20 career, including 2 centuries and 32 half-centuries.
GT’s strategy and challenges
Gujarat Titans are at the top of the points table, one win away from the playoffs with 16 points from 11 matches. But the lack of Butler and limited wicketkeeping options (only Anuj Rawat) forced the team to think. Mendis is sure to get a chance in the playing XI.
GT had earlier replaced injured Glenn Phillips with Dasun Shanaka, and now the Sri Lankan tadka has increased with Mendis. However, Mendis may not be retained for the next season.
GT’s next match is against Delhi Capitals on May 18. Fans will keep an eye on Butler’s last league matches and Mendis’ playoff performance.
