Sunday’s IPL match at Wankhede Stadium produced some unexpected drama off the field. Two players found themselves in trouble with the match officials after the game. The fines handed out tell an interesting story about what happened.

Mumbai Indians battled Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-scoring thriller yesterday. RCB posted a massive 240 runs while MI responded with 222. But the excitement didn’t end with those big totals alone.
Hot and humid conditions made things difficult for everyone at the stadium. Both teams took multiple breaks during play to cope with the weather. The match lasted longer than usual due to these factors.
Hardik Pandya’s Slow Over-Rate Fine
Hardik Pandya got slapped with a Rs 12 lakh fine after the match. The Mumbai Indians captain maintained a slow over-rate during RCB’s batting innings. Article 2.22 of IPL’s Code of Conduct covers this specific offense.
RCB’s first innings lasted two hours and one minute total. MI’s reply took even longer at two hours and four minutes. This marked Mumbai’s first slow over-rate offense this IPL 2026 season.
The weather conditions contributed to the slow pace throughout both innings. However, rules remain rules, regardless of external circumstances that affect play.
Tim David’s Ball-Handling Issues
RCB all-rounder Tim David faced fines for a completely different reason. He disobeyed the umpire’s instructions twice during the same match! The first incident happened in the 18th over clearly.
David smashed a massive six off Hardik Pandya that damaged the ball. Umpires called for a replacement from the box of used balls. David picked one up, toyed with it, then ignored repeated requests.
The frustrated umpire waited while David deliberately delayed returning the ball. A second breach occurred in the 20th over when David again refused. IPL officials fined him 25% of his match fee immediately.
He also received one demerit point under Article 2.4 for disobeying instructions. David admitted the offense and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction without appeal.
