Jos Buttler suffered a nightmare T20 World Cup scoring only 87 runs! Eight innings produced almost nothing from England’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter. India ended England’s campaign in the semi-final on March 8.

But Buttler refuses to give up on his England career yet! He holds an ECB central contract with 18 months remaining. That contract suggests England still values him despite his terrible form.
Buttler’s Dismal Tournament Numbers
Just 87 runs across eight T20 World Cup innings looks horrific! Buttler managed only one half-century in his last four ICC events. Those statistics show an alarming decline in his international batting.
England’s semi-final loss to India exposed Buttler’s struggles completely! He couldn’t deliver when his team needed him most. Former captains usually provide experience under pressure but Buttler failed.
The wicketkeeper-batter acknowledged that his best efforts didn’t produce results this time! That acceptance shows maturity despite obvious disappointment personally.
“I don’t know. Obviously I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing, but I’ve been playing some of the best cricket of my [career] in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best,” Buttler said.
He’s no longer England’s captain or selector now! Selection decisions happen without his input anymore. Whether England picks him for the upcoming series remains completely uncertain.
“I certainly have ambitions [to continue playing for England] but no longer being a captain, I’m not a selector and whatever, so what will be will be. Yeah, we will see.”
Family Break in the French Mountains
Buttler took a week-long break “up the mountains” in France! He disconnected from cricket completely spending time with family. That break provided the “perfect” and “refreshing” mental recovery needed.
Getting away from cricket’s pressures helps athletes reset mentally always! Buttler needed that escape after his tournament nightmare. Family time reminds players what matters beyond cricket.
Now he’s traveling to India on Saturday preparing for IPL! Gujarat Titans await Buttler’s arrival for the 2026 season. IPL provides a redemption opportunity after international failure recently.
England’s Future and Buttler’s Role
Buttler wants to feature in England’s July home series against India! Five T20Is and three ODIs happen that month. Those matches could determine his international future completely.
He defended England’s management under Harry Brook and Brendon McCullum strongly! “Fantastic environment at the World Cup,” Buttler stated publicly. That support shows no internal conflict despite the results.
Buttler praised India as a “serious team” and “worthy winners” generously! India dominated the knockout stages beating England convincingly in the semi-final. Their quality was undeniable throughout the tournament obviously.
Can Buttler rediscover form with the Gujarat Titans earning England recall? IPL 2026 becomes his proving ground for an international comeback. The veteran needs to run desperately to restore selectors’ confidence.
His 18-month contract provides a safety net for now! But continued poor form makes that contract meaningless eventually. Buttler knows performances matter more than contract duration always.
