Lucknow Super Giants have picked former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan as their mentor ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. This appointment signifies his return to the IPL management scene after a long break.
Previously he spent five seasons with the five-time champions Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022. Zaheer will fill the role that became vacant last season when current India head coach Gautam Gambhir transitioned to mentor the Kolkata Knight Riders.
While KKR went on to clinch the title, Lucknow finished seventh in the standings during their third IPL season. Zaheer initially served as the director of cricket for the Mumbai Indians before advancing to the position of head of global development for the franchise.
The Lucknow franchise is also without a bowling coach, following the departure of former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel, who took on a coaching role with the Indian men’s national team.
Zaheer have 610 international wickets across formats, he played for three franchises during his career: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils.
Over 10 IPL seasons, Zaheer claimed 102 wickets in 100 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 7.58. His final IPL appearance came in 2017 when he captained the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) before retiring from all forms of cricket.
Currently, LSG is led by head coach Justin Langer, with Lance Klusener and Adam Voges as part of the support staff.
