WPL 2025 UPW vs MI, After Match Statement
Hayley Matthews (Player of the Match, Mumbai Indians): Probably got another 50 but a lot more scratchier than today. I wanted to stay really calm, they are one of the better powerplay sides with the bat and we wanted to get back at them. It was pretty good to bowl and when the dew came on, it got a bit tough. Super excited to head to Mumbai for the last leg
Harmanpreet Kaur (captain, Mumbai Indians): I think they batted really well and we couldn’t use the conditions very well. After that, we did well and we were waiting for the opportunity. (Amelia Kerr) She bowled really well and picked up crucial wickets. We are flexible, the tournament is getting to the main part and we need to prepare for everything. I think we have tried to stay together for all the games and contribute to the team.
Amelia Kerr, Mumbai Indians: In T20 cricket, you get a lot of luck, sometimes I had it today. Like in the last over. It’s about trying to bowl the ball in the right areas the most times. It’s about finding ways to pick wickets and try to contribute in any way. It’s not that fun bowling the last over with three fielders out. Kind of changed my plans, I was going to go wide plan with Deepti with the shorter leg side boundary.
Ended up trying to bluff her. Bit of a challenge getting through the overs quicker. It worked okay today with three out. I did enjoy (opening) found out a few days ago. Batting hasn’t gone well so far in the WPL, the ball comes on nice. Nice opportunity, hopefully I can contribute with the bat in the remaining games.
Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Mumbai Indians, is handed the Orange cap by Amelia Kerr, hands Kerr the purple cap and speaks: We’ve got a lot of bowlers who take wickets, if not in the powerplay then in the middle overs, that can squeeze the teams. That certainly makes it easier for the batters. Got some runs up the order. Haven’t got my phone back, when the time comes I will be off (chuckles). I have some games when it doesn’t come out right (back of hand slower ball) and some games where it does. It’s a difficult ball to bowl. You take the chance with it, you know you get a wicket when you get it right. You can go for boundary with your best ball and a wicket off a bad one.
Deepti Sharma, UP Warriorz captain: I think the way we made back-to-back mistakes are costing us – the middle-order in fact – the top and lower order are doing well. We need to focus on the middle order. Few positives – Voll batted well in her second game, was nice to see. When you play in the middle order, you might need to shift the momentum. Had hopes from the batters, hope to put the effort in the last few matches that has been missing till now. As a player, I think how to step up in every department. There have been learnings and positives, I keep thinking how well we can fare as a team.
