The Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia is arguably the most competitive Test series at the moment. India have enjoyed tremendous success against Australia in the last decade staying unbeaten in the previous four series.
The last defeat for India came on the 2014-2015 tour to Australia. This defeat was followed by a 2-1 win for India at home. India then built on that with a win in Australia on the 2018-19 tour.
That win was termed a fluke, however, India repeated the feat by hammering Australia on the 2020-21 tour. India then retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home.
The upcoming five-match Test series will provide India a rare opportunity to complete a hat-trick of series wins in Australia; however, it will require a mammoth effort from the Rohit Sharma-led side.
India will head to Australia with a relatively new-look squad, as Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, cornerstones of the previous two series wins in Australia, may not make the cut. Australia star Nathan Lyon has predicted a 5-0 win for Australia.
“It’s been 10 years since we have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. I started thinking about this series when England were over in India, watching them go about it. I love the game and I will watch a decent Test match, but I have eyes on this series for a long time now. My prediction is 5-0 to Australia,” Lyon told Alyssa Healy on the ‘Willow Talk’ podcast.
Lyon further stated that he wants Aussie stalwarts like Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne to score big runs against a formidable Indian bowling lineup.
