Australia faces tough decisions in picking its squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 tournament. Coach Andrew McDonald spoke about injuries affecting Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David. These three key players might still make the provisional 15-man squad despite fitness worries.

Injury Concerns for Key Players
Pat Cummins carries a lumbar stress fracture which kept him out of matches. Australia needs scans to understand how serious his back problem really is. The medical team will monitor him closely before making any final selection calls.
Josh Hazlewood dealt with hamstring and Achilles issues troubling him for weeks now. He started bowling again showing good progress during recent practice sessions there. Hazlewood’s fitness gives Australia hope he’ll be ready when the tournament begins.
Tim David hurt his hamstring during a Big Bash League game which worried everyone. McDonald remains optimistic about David’s recovery timeline despite the injury setback.
Coach McDonald’s Selection Approach
Andrew McDonald wants experienced players for the T20 World Cup 2026 if possible. He balances this desire with building a new team core for future tournaments. The final Australia squad depends heavily on Big Bash League performances coming up.
“Pat will have a scan, I think, in another four weeks, so that’ll give us the information then on where he’s at for the World Cup. He’ll be named in the squad of 15, and then we’ll get that information as to where he’s at,” McDonald said.
“Josh is returning to bowl. He looks as though he should be right in terms of possible timeframes. Not sure whether it’s just pure muscle or tendon, and that’ll give us a timeframe. I think the timeframe will be kind on Tim David as well. So, he should be available regardless of what that injury is.”
Players must prove their fitness and form during domestic matches before getting picked. Any fresh injury updates will change McDonald’s plans for the provisional squad selection.
Australia believes they have time because their opening matches look relatively easier ahead. They face Ireland and Zimbabwe first which gives injured stars extra recovery days.
World Cup Preparation Timeline
The T20 World Cup 2026 schedule favors Australia with those early fixtures against weaker opponents. McDonald can afford to wait slightly longer before finalising his best playing 15 there. Pat Cummins brings leadership and fast bowling skills which Australia desperately needs.
Josh Hazlewood and Tim David add depth making the team much stronger overall. The coach knows losing any of these three hurts Australia’s title chances significantly. The selection committee meets soon to decide who makes the cut for this major tournament ahead.
