Ravindra Jadeja got a nice surprise when he learned about his vice-captaincy role. The all-rounder found out only after the BCCI announced the squad publicly. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar never called him beforehand to discuss this new responsibility.

Jadeja will serve as vice-captain to Shubman Gill for the West Indies Test series. Rishabh Pant’s injury forced the selectors to restructure India’s leadership group completely here. The experienced all-rounder accepted this challenge with happiness and pride in his heart.
How Jadeja Discovered His New Role
The selection committee didn’t inform Jadeja personally about making him vice-captain before announcing it. He learned about this appointment through the official team announcement, like everyone else. This caught him off guard, but he felt honoured by the trust shown.
“They didn’t say anything to me. They just announced the team, and I saw that besides my name, the VC is written, so I was very happy.
“And as a player, you always gain confidence whenever you see some kind of gesture from the management, captain and coach. At the end of the day, you are always happy to do good and share your experience with the team,” Jadeja said.
Jadeja told bcci.tv that finding out this way was unexpected for him initially. But he quickly understood the responsibility that comes with this important position now. The Gujarat star values how management, captain, and coach believe in his abilities strongly.

Jadeja’s Commitment to Leading India
The new vice-captain feels motivated by this additional responsibility given to him recently. He wants to use his vast experience to help the team succeed always. Jadeja promised to support Gill and contribute wherever the team needs him most.
“It’s very special for me as a player. They gave me respect because the management, captain, and coach have decided to give me some extra responsibility.
“I am very happy to do it, and whenever the team needed my experience and needed me to say anything regarding planning, I am always happy to do it,” he added.
The all-rounder knows this role shows respect from everyone in Indian cricket currently. He’s eager to step up when situations demand leadership from him on the field. Jadeja plans to guide younger players while performing his own duties brilliantly as usual.
Shubman Gill’s Praise for Jadeja
Captain Shubman Gill spoke highly of Jadeja’s recent performances in Test cricket matches. He called Jadeja India’s number six batter now because of his consistent run-scoring. Gill believes Jadeja’s form will be crucial for India’s success against the West Indies, definitely.
“I think in the past couple of years, the kind of form that he has shown, we always knew… playing Jaddu bhai in India is always a difficult aspect (to the opposite side).
“The kind of form he has shown with the bat is the reason I think he has become our number 6 batter in Test matches. I think over the past two years, he has been in tremendous form,” Gill said.
The young captain trusts Jadeja’s judgment and experience completely, going into this series ahead. Gill knows that having such a reliable vice-captain makes his job much easier overall. Jadeja brings both batting depth and bowling options to India’s playing eleven.
