Ricky Ponting, who captained Australia in several major tournaments during his career, shared his thoughts on the ICC review.
He expressed happiness that cricket will get a chance to reach new audiences on the Olympic stage.
“It could be a positive thing for our game. We have been trying for a long time to get cricket back in the Olympics and finally we have got success.”
Ponting recalled his cricketing experience at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and said he is very excited at the prospect of serving as a mentor or coach of the Australian team at the 2028 Olympic Games.
“It will be a great job to be a mentor with the cricket team at the Olympic Games. The experience I had during the Commonwealth Games was unforgettable. If I get a chance, I will accept it with an open heart.”
“So, look, I won’t say no, but I think a lot of people will come forward to be mentors or coaches for the Australian team at the Olympic Games.
“It will be special to be a part of it, so who knows? We’ll keep our fingers crossed to see what happens.”
Ponting also spoke on the growing popularity of cricket in the US. He pointed out that the introduction of Major League Cricket (MLC) has given cricket a new opportunity to establish itself at the grassroots level in the US.
Ponting believes that the thrill and entertainment of T20 cricket can be presented in a big way to increase the popularity of cricket in America.
“When you compare baseball to T20 cricket, it should be a lot easier to sell to a younger audience in the US.”
The return of cricket to the Olympics is not only a historic moment for the sport, but it will also increase the enthusiasm for cricket all over the world.
