The BCCI President has confirmed surprising news about Rohit Sharma. India’s star batsman will miss the upcoming World Cup.

Rohit recently lost his position as ODI captain. Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly supports this tough call. Ganguly thinks the decision makes sense for Indian cricket’s future.
Shubman Gill Takes Over as Captain
Shubman Gill will lead India in ODI matches now. Ganguly has openly praised this appointment. The young cricketer earned this chance through consistent performances. His batting in Test cricket caught everyone’s attention lately.
“I think it has been done in consultation with Rohit, from outside… I don’t know what’s inside. Somewhere down the line, I feel that it’s a fair call. Rohit can keep playing, and in the meantime, you keep grooming a young captain. So, I really don’t see a problem in that,” Ganguly said.
The BCCI consulted former captains before finalising this change. This collaborative approach shows the board values experienced opinions. Multiple senior players gave their views on this matter. Such teamwork helps maintain stability in Indian cricket.
“I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. So, I don’t know whether it is ‘sacking’ or anything. I am sure it is a mutual discussion because Rohit has been an outstanding leader,” he added.

Age Factor Plays Key Role
Ganguly pointed out an important fact about Rohit’s age. The star player will turn 40 by 2027. This is when the next World Cup happens. Age is now becoming a concern for selectors. They want younger players to lead the team forward.
“He doesn’t play T20 cricket. So, he will not be a part of the World Cup in 2026 in India. But when they go to 2027 in South Africa, he will be 40 years old. And that’s a big number in sport,” Ganguly said.
However, Rohit is still part of the Indian squad. He has not been dropped from the team completely. He will play in the upcoming matches as a regular player. His experience still matters a lot.
Domestic Cricket Becomes Important
Ganguly gave a clear message to senior players. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli must play domestic cricket. This will help them keep their national team spots. Performance and fitness will decide their future roles. No player gets special treatment anymore.
“As I said, it depends on how fit they (Rohit and Virat) remain and how much performance they keep up. Whatever opportunity they get, they have to play domestic cricket.”
“They have to play domestic cricket. That’s what it is. If they keep at it and performing, they will play for India,” he added.
The former BCCI chief stressed that everyone must prove themselves. Playing domestic matches shows form and commitment. It helps selectors judge players better.
