Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. His comparison has been attracting a lot of attention on social media.
He believes that the unique mindset of Rohit has set a new standard in cricket and he is better that previous Indian captains – Kohli and Dhoni.
Rohit’s approach differs from Dhoni’s calm tactics and Kohli’s aggressive style. According to Ashwin, Rohit focuses on preparation and adaptability.
Rohit is also known for staying calm under pressure, like the legendary Dhoni. However, he excels at creating a positive and relaxed team atmosphere that helps young players grow, making the Indian team a strong competitor.
Ashwin pointed out that while Dhoni gives players a long run to prove themselves and Kohli leads by example with inspiring leadership, he believes Rohit Sharma is the better captain due to his leadership style and tactical understanding.
Moreover Ashwin noted that Rohit relies not just on gut feelings but also on deep analysis. He closely collaborates with his coaching staff to plan against each opponent.
Discussing Rohit’s approach, Ashwin said, “2-3 things are nice about Rohit’s captaincy. He always keep the environment of the team light. He makes an effort to keep it light. And he stays very balanced and tactically he is strong. Both Dhoni and Virat were also tactically strong but Rohit works more on the tactics.
If there is any big match or series coming up, Rohit sits with the analytics team and coach and prepares for it, like what’s the weakness of a particular batsman, what’s the plan of a bowler. That’s his strength but he always keeps the environment of the team light and backs the players. If he selects a player in the XI, he backs them 100%. I have played most of my career with these three captains.”
Ashwin also talked about Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir’s passionate leadership style. He said that Gambhir is very intense about his captaincy, somewhat like Rohit, but with even more intensity.
