Glenn Maxwell surprised everyone with his announcement of retirement. The 36-year-old won’t play ODI cricket anymore. His body can’t handle the long matches. Maxwell will still play T20 games for Australia.

Maxwell played his last ODI during the Champions Trophy. He told team selector George Bailey about his decision. “My legs just don’t work like before,” Maxwell said. The all-rounder scored almost 4,000 runs in 149 matches.
Everyone knows Maxwell hits the ball really hard. He has the fastest strike rate among batsmen with 2,000+ runs. Maxwell helped Australia win World Cups in 2015 and 2023.

But now things are different for this star player. His knees hurt after every game. Recovery takes much longer than the imagination. Maxwell realized he couldn’t make it to 2027.
Why Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODI Cricket Now
The Champions Trophy matches were really tough for Maxwell. Pakistan’s grounds felt like concrete under his feet. His back started aching during the Afghanistan game. The rain made the field slippery and dangerous.
“We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him ‘I don’t think I am going to make that, it’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own’. Hopefully, they get enough of a lead-in to hang onto that role. Maxwell said.
Maxwell tried everything to stay fit for ODI cricket. He worked with fitness coaches and physiotherapists. Special diets and recovery sessions didn’t help much. His joints still felt stiff every morning.

The spinner-batsman loved representing Australia in ODIs. But love isn’t enough when your body says no. Maxwell made the smart choice for his health. Cricket fans will understand his decision.
What’s Next for Maxwell
T20 cricket suits Maxwell’s current fitness level perfectly. Those games last only three hours maximum. His explosive batting style works great in T20s. Maxwell can still win matches for Australia.
Steve Smith and David Warner made similar choices recently. Marcus Stoinis also stepped back from ODI cricket. These players know when to stop pushing themselves.
