Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody has expressed his support for the new rule introduced by the Indian Premier League regarding overseas players.

Moody believes that if these players wish to participate in the tournament they must demonstrate full commitment.

Recently, the IPL governing council announced a set of new regulations ahead of the mega auction for the upcoming season.

One significant rule states that an overseas player will not be able to register for the mega auction unless they have registered for the preceding mini-auction. The only exception will be in cases of injury, which must be confirmed by the player’s home board.

“Any overseas player will have to register for the big auction. In case the player does not register, then he will have to miss the subsequent small auction. The only exception will be in case of an injury/medical condition which will have to be confirmed by the (player’s) home board before the big auction,” an IPL statement read.

Tom Moody backs IPL’s new rule. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he supported this new regulation, noting that some overseas players had previously chosen to make themselves unavailable for the mega auction opting instead for the mini-auction to secure lucrative contracts.

He believes the new rule will help players like Jasprit Bumrah receive appropriate remuneration in accordance with their commitment. Moody stressed that overseas players need to dedicate themselves to their franchises unless they are injured.

“Yeah, I think it’s a very good thing (overseas players’ compulsion to be available for mega auction). We have seen for too long that players coming out for mini-auction and get a huge payday because of supply and demand forces of that particular year” Moody stated.

He also mentioned that great Indian players like Jasprit Bumrah and others are getting paid well underneath than many overseas players. He further added that players should be committed to the tournament, supporting the new rules.
