Sri Lanka cricket legend and former batsman Sanath Jayasuriya has once again surprised the cricket world with his magic. This time his coaching skills have shown wonders instead of his bat.
Under Jayasuriya’s guidance, Sri Lanka has broken a myth of almost three decades by winning the three-match ODI series against India 2-0.
Sri Lanka ended the 27-year long wait to win a bilateral ODI series against India, and the credit for this great achievement goes directly to Sanath Jayasuriya, who was in the role of interim coach at this time.
Sri Lanka won the second ODI by 32 runs and won the series by defeating India by 110 runs in the third and final ODI. The win was a historic moment not just for Sri Lanka cricket but also for Jayasuriya as Sri Lanka have achieved success again after their last series win against India in 1997.
Sanath Jayasuriya praised the Sri Lankan players and said that the secret of their success lies in confidence.
“We faced a very tough time but the players bounced back and beat a No. 1 team like India,” Jayasuriya said proudly.
He further added, “The players just need confidence. If they put runs on the board and bowl well, these small things can give them confidence.”
Sri Lanka had already faced defeat in the T20 series but under Jayasuriya’s coaching the team bounced back and showed that they have immense potential. According to Jayasuriya, this win is the beginning of a new era where Sri Lanka cricket has found a new direction and confidence.
Speaking with Cricbuzz, Jayasuriya said, “It was a very long wait. In 1997, I myself scored a lot of runs in that series against India. Now after 27 years, I am part of the team and I am very happy to be a part of these boys.”
This historic victory of Sri Lanka under the coaching of Jayasuriya has become an inspiration for cricket lovers and has proved that with confidence and the right direction, any team can overcome any challenge.
