India’s 76-run loss to South Africa raised many questions among fans. Why did Axar Patel sit out such an important match? What’s happening with the struggling openers?

Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak finally answered these burning questions. He revealed the thinking behind India’s team selection decisions. The explanations make more sense now after hearing his perspective.
The Real Reason Behind Axar Patel’s Benching
Washington Sundar played instead of Axar Patel in the Super Eight match. Many fans felt confused by this sudden change. But there’s a clear tactical reason behind it.
South Africa had three left-handed openers in their lineup. The team management wanted an off-spinner to counter them early. Washington Sundar got the nod for this specific role.
“We thought that an off-spinner was needed because three left-handers were upfront. We got the wickets in the beginning. Washington didn’t bowl in the Powerplay,” Kotak said.
The plan was for Sundar to bowl during the Powerplay overs. However, the pacers took early wickets instead. This changed the entire bowling strategy completely. Sundar never got his Powerplay opportunity.
Kotak stressed that Axar Patel’s form wasn’t the issue. The experienced all-rounder maintains high morale and confidence. His benching was purely a tactical decision for one match.
“But, actually, he was supposed to bowl in a Powerplay. So, that can change according to the match. For that reason, this combination was decided. And the rest – what you are saying about confidence – Axar is such a player; he has played so much and performed so much, he doesn’t lack confidence. It was very clear from him, and from the head coach and the captain, what we are thinking and why we are doing this,” he added.
Sanju Samson’s Potential Comeback
India’s opening pair has struggled badly throughout the tournament. Both openers failed again against South Africa miserably. Changes now seem inevitable before the next match.
Kotak dropped a huge hint about Sanju Samson’s return. “Definitely something to think about,” Kotak said about Samson. That statement suggests management is seriously considering bringing him back.
“See, basically, if we felt that Sanju’s last few innings were low on confidence and Ishan was scoring runs, then obviously you go with Ishan. Now we are in a situation where we have to think about whether we need to change anything or if we should still go with the same thing. But yes, it is definitely something to think about. If we have to change something, what do we change and how do we change it?,” he added.
The coaching staff admits they made errors in selection. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir maintain transparent communication. They keep the squad united even during tough decisions.
What Changes India Might Make
The team faces the West Indies next in the Super Eight stage. Winning becomes absolutely crucial now after the South Africa defeat. Every match matters in this tight group.
The management is reviewing all options for the playing eleven. They’re prioritizing victories over sticking with struggling players. Expect some bold changes in the lineup soon.
Kotak emphasized that squad morale remains strong despite the loss. Communication levels stay high within the team environment. Players understand that tactical changes don’t reflect personal failures!
