There’s a lot of noise right now about the future of a senior Indian batter. Word is that his ODI career might be nearing its end soon. Honestly selectors might want to pump the brakes here a little. Before any final call, these five points deserve a proper look.

Rohit Sharma Remains a Proven Match-Winner
Let’s be honest, Rohit is one of the greatest white-ball openers India has ever had. He completely changed how India approached ODI innings by going hard from ball one.
He’s still the only Indian batter with 3 ODI double centuries under his belt. That knock of 264 not out against Sri Lanka remains the highest individual ODI score ever.
His Leadership Experience Still Matters
He’s also led India before by taking the team unbeaten to the 2023 World Cup final. He also won the Champions Trophy 2025 for India.
His record as captain speaks for itself. His record is 42 wins from 56 games. That kind of experience could really help Shubman Gill settle into the captaincy role.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Isn’t a Complete Replacement Yet
Jaiswal has shown real stake, including centuries in his little ODI games so far. Still, ODI cricket demands sustained consistency over a much longer period of time.
Rather than rushing him into Rohit’s role directly he should keep gaining experience steadily. Patience here would likely benefit both the player and the team over time.
Removing Him Could Hurt the Team Culture
Rohit is respected as a calm, approachable senior figure inside the dressing room. A forced exit, rather than a natural transition, could genuinely unsettle the entire squad.
With roughly 15 months left before the next World Cup, stability matters a great deal. Other senior players might also feel insecure watching an experienced teammate drop suddenly.
His Fitness Levels Support His Future
Rohit went through a deep fitness overhaul after the 2025 Champions Trophy win. Reports say he shed a good amount of weight through strict training and diet.
He also bounced back quickly from a hamstring injury picked up during the IPL. His sharper mobility on the field says he’s still very much up for it.
