Moises Henriques officially switched allegiances completely now. Portugal is his birth country. Henriques played for Australia previously in 44 international matches. Last played international cricket in 2021.

At the age of 39, a career change was a very significant moment. Portugal, a European nation with cricket. Moises Henriques will represent them in the European sub-regional T20 World Cup Qualifier, which is happening in Finland in August. First qualification stage for 2028.

Australia and New Zealand are hosting the 2028 World Cup together. Moises Henriques hopes to qualify Portugal for the World Cup. Born in Portugal, the family moved to Australia early. Portuguese heritage is very important to him and his entire family.

Moises Henriques wants to help cricket grow in Associate nations. Emerging cricket countries need support and this decision supports global cricket.

“I guess the opportunity for growth in the game around the world, it’s probably not just my Portuguese heritage, but the game, more importantly, and the opportunity for growth worldwide,” Henriques said.

“We can improve the quality of all the engagement in, say, another 10 or 20 nations around the world, and then you’re looking at cricket World Cups that stop the entire world, as opposed to a couple of Western countries and the subcontinent,” he added.

Eligibility and ICC Stand-down Period Completed

Moises Henriques completed the stand-down period required. ICC rules are very strict about a 3-year mandatory wait for switching from a Full Member nation to associate nations. Henriques waited three years and is now eligible to represent Portugal. Joe Burns did a similar thing as the former Australia opener switched to Italy.
