Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets in the first Test and then sealed a clean sweep with a six-wicket victory in the second Test. This marks Pakistan’s first-ever Test series loss to Bangladesh.
Following their two-match Test series loss to Bangladesh in Rawalpindi recently, Pakistan slipped to eighth place in the updated ICC Test Rankings on Wednesday. They now hold 76 rating points, the lowest they have recorded since 1965.
“Pakistan dropped two places in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings to go to eighth position after suffering a shock series loss at home to Bangladesh,” the ICC stated on its website.
“This is the lowest rating points Pakistan have had in the Test rankings table since 1965, barring a brief period where they did not have a place in the rankings due to an insufficient number of matches.”
Bangladesh’s successful chase of 185 in the second Test was also the third highest successful chase in Pakistan for any visiting side, though there was little recognition for the Tigers.
Despite gaining 13 rating points, Bangladesh remains in ninth position, trailing Pakistan. However their 2-0 series victory has improved their standing in the World Test Championship cycle 2023-25, placing them fourth behind leaders India, second-placed Australia, and third-placed New Zealand.
Now shifting their focus to a two-Test series against India beginning in Chennai on September 19 Bangladesh holds 45.83 percentage points and 33 points, with three wins and three defeats in six Tests.
In the WTC, teams earn 12 points for a Test win, four for a draw, and six for a tie, with rankings determined by the percentage of points won.
