Chennai Super Kings can’t catch a break this season with injuries piling up. Their campaign keeps getting worse with every passing week now. Another key player just got added to their already lengthy injury list.

How Did Ayush Mhatre Get Injured?
The injury happened during CSK’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 unfortunately. Ayush Mhatre was chasing runs during the powerplay when disaster struck suddenly. He had to run a risky double in the fifth over.
His left hamstring gave way while completing that second run frantically. The physio rushed onto the field immediately to check the damage done. Mhatre continued batting briefly despite the obvious discomfort showing on his face.
Everyone watching could see something was seriously wrong with his running afterwards. But CSK didn’t retire him hurt, which former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin criticized heavily. That decision might have made the injury much worse than necessary.
CSK officially announced on April 21 that he is ruled out completely. He won’t play another single match this season. That hamstring tear needs proper rest and rehabilitation for several weeks minimum.
“Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush’s injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks. We wish Ayush a speedy recovery,” CSK announced.
Why Losing Mhatre Hurts CSK So Badly
Ayush Mhatre wasn’t just another player filling space in CSK’s lineup regularly. He brought aggressive intent that their top order desperately lacked all season. His numbers prove how valuable he’d become – 201 runs across 6 matches.
That strike rate of 177.87 shows his fearless approach perfectly at the crease. Averaging 33.50 while playing aggressively makes those stats even more impressive actually. He joined CSK as an injury replacement for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad last year.
Now CSK is again missing a player at number 3 in the playing eleven simultaneously because of injuries. The number three position sits empty with nobody capable of filling it. MS Dhoni can’t solve this problem either at age 44 unfortunately.
Dhoni struggles batting beyond 10 deliveries these days due to his limitations. His own injury issues mean he’s already excluded from several matches himself.
CSK’s Growing Injury Crisis in IPL 2026
Khaleel Ahmed got injured earlier with a serious quadriceps tear. Nathan Ellis also joined the injury list, getting excluded for the season. Now, Ayush Mhatre makes it three key players skipped from their squad.
Finding quality mid-season replacements becomes nearly impossible during IPL 2026 tournaments. Most impactful players are already playing for other franchises obviously. The replacement pool looks terribly thin for CSK’s specific needs right now.
Their playoff chances are slipping away with each injury announcement frankly. This 2026 season has become absolutely forgettable for the defending champions. Everything that could go wrong is going wrong simultaneously for them.
