Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has been involved in a case concerning attack on students amid ongoing unrest in the country.
His father Golam Mortaza Swapan has also been named among the 90 individuals accused in a complaint filed by Sheikh Mostafa AL-Muzahidur Rahman Palash at the Narail Sadar police station on 10 September. According to the details of the case, Mashrafe and his father participated in a rally at the Narail intersection on Sunday, August 4.
Following this event, on August 6, reports emerged that Mashrafe’s house had been set ablaze as Bangladesh continued to endure protests, which prompted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down and flee the country.
Now 40 years old Mashrafe is preparing for a return to cricket, with plans to play for the Detroit Falcons in the US T10 League. In a related development, veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has also been named among 147 individuals charged in a murder case linked to the political unrest.
Rafiqul Islam, father of Mohammed Rubel—who was killed during the protests—filed the complaint at the Adabor police station in Dhaka.
While in Pakistan for a two-match Test series, Shakib faced calls for his removal from the squad but chose to remain, contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s clean sweep with a 2-0 series victory. He received commendations from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for his dedication to the team despite the personal challenges he is facing.
Shakib did not return to Bangladesh after the series, instead heading to England, where he featured for Surrey in their County Championship match against Somerset at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton. He excelled with the ball in the first innings finishing with impressive figures of 33.5-7-97-4.
Looking ahead, Shakib is set to travel to India to participate in a two-match Test series that is scheduled to commence on Thursday, September 19, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
