Gautam Gambhir’s Future as Indian Coach Looks Secure
According to a RevSportz report, his position with the team remains genuinely secure. The BCCI reportedly views India’s Test team as still transitioning. Gambhir became head coach in 2024, replacing Rahul Dravid.
Under him, India won two ICC titles across white-ball formats recently. Even a Sri Lanka series defeat wouldn’t reportedly threaten his current position. An interim coaching appointment is effectively ruled out at this stage.
Despite those wins, Gambhir has faced growing criticism over recent results overall. India suffered white-ball defeats against both Ireland and England this year. Test performances have also been inconsistent, especially at home against South Africa.
That series marked South Africa’s first Test win in India since 2000. Captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury during that difficult series too. India were bowled out for just 93 while chasing a modest target.
Why the BCCI Isn’t Making a Change Right Now
VVS Laxman reportedly remains comfortable in his current Centre of Excellence role. He’d previously turned down the head coach job back in 2024. Split coaching between formats also hasn’t gained real traction in Indian cricket.
Because of this, Gambhir is expected to continue overseeing shorter formats too. This continuity should last at least until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Only Gambhir’s own resignation would reportedly change this current arrangement significantly.

India’s two-Test series against Sri Lanka begins August 15 in Galle city. Shubman Gill will captain the side throughout this important series overall. India enter without key players like Bumrah, Sudharsan, and Sundar unfortunately missing.
Their absence leaves fewer proven options for this genuinely challenging away tour. Still, the BCCI appears focused on long-term rebuilding over short-term results. Gautam Gambhir’s future looks secure regardless of this particular series outcome.
