Cricket’s biggest tournament is about to look quite different next time around. A key meeting held in Edinburgh just settled some major details recently. Fans following the sport closely will want to read this carefully today. Here’s a full breakdown of what has actually been decided so far.

A Fresh Format for the Big Tournament
The ICC announces major changes for the next 50-over World Cup following its Annual General Meeting. The 2027 edition will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Games will run from October 4 through November 27, 2027, across all venues.
A total of 14 teams will battle it out this time. The contest will feature 54 matches spread across several stages. Australia enters as defending champions after their 2023 final win over India.
This contest will not use a simple round-robin format like the last editions.
How the New ODI World Cup 2027 Format Works
The contest begins with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked teams. Only the winner from that mini-league joins the main event later.
Round two features 12 teams split evenly into 2 groups. Each side plays every other team once within its own group. The top three teams from each group then move forward together. One extra team also qualifies based on overall standings across groups.
Seven teams then enter the Super 7 stage for round three. Every team faces the other 6 sides once during this stage.
Semi-Finals and the Road to the Final
The top 4 teams from the Super 7 stage reach the semi-finals. It’s simply 1st against 4th, and 2nd against 3rd in the semis. Winners of both semi-final matches then advance straight to the final.
The ICC World Cup Final is scheduled for November 21, 2027. This entire new structure replaces the straightforward league format used earlier. Both the 2019 and 2023 editions relied on a single round-robin league.
The ICC announces major changes that clearly favor a longer and layered tournament structure. This format adds more stages while welcoming an expanded 14-team field overall.
Fans can expect plenty of drama across every stage. It should make the road to the title far more competitive.
| Stage | Format |
|---|---|
| Round 1 | Teams 12, 13, or 14: Round-robin Super Series. The top team advances to Round 2. |
| Round 2 | Two groups of 6 teams (30 matches). The top three teams from each group, along with the next highest-placed team across both groups, qualify for the Super 7. |
| Round 3 | Super 7: Single round-robin stage (21 matches). The top four teams qualify for the semifinals. |
| Semi-finals | 2 matches: 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd teams from the Super 7 points table. |
| Final | Winner of Semi-final 1 vs Winner of Semi-final 2. |
