India walked away with a solid win in the opening match. One injury scare, though, has left plenty of fans a little worried. A big leadership question now hangs over the next game entirely. Here’s a closer look at what could actually happen next.

What Happened to Shubman Gill in Match One
India beat England comfortably in the first ODI at Birmingham recently. Gill led the side brilliantly and scored an unbeaten 80 runs. He retired hurt midway through his innings due to a hamstring strain.
He never returned to bat again during that particular match. Gill did attend the press conference, though he looked visibly uncomfortable walking.
With just one rest day before Cardiff, doubts remain over his fitness. If Shubman Gill misses the second ODI, plans will need adjusting quickly.
Who Steps In as Leader Instead
If Shubman Gill misses the second ODI, Shreyas Iyer becomes the obvious choice. As India’s ODI vice-captain, Iyer is the natural stand-in leader. This would actually be his very first chance to captain the Indian team in ODIs.
His earlier T20I captaincy record wasn’t particularly strong, though, it’s worth noting. India failed to win any of the 7 matches he led. Even so, the vice-captain role automatically covers for the captain’s absence.
Why the Team Isn’t Taking Any Chances
There’s still genuine hope that Gill could recover in time regardless. However, if there’s any risk of the injury worsening, caution will win. Both Gill and the team management would rather avoid unnecessary risks here.
Protecting his long-term fitness matters far more than one single match. India’s ODI side has generally performed really well under his captaincy so far. Senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also offer valuable support.
KL Rahul adds smart tactical input from behind the stumps too. Jasprit Bumrah’s return has further strengthened India’s overall bowling balance nicely.
Whatever happens, India will want to protect its healthy 1-0 series lead. Fans will simply have to wait and watch Gill’s fitness update closely. Either way, the second ODI in Cardiff promises plenty of drama ahead.
