A minor scare during training has sparked plenty of concern among fans. The captain’s fitness has suddenly become a talking point ahead of a big series. The board, though, has stepped in to clear up the confusion. Here’s exactly what the BCCI actually confirmed today about the situation.

Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Test Series? Here’s the Truth
Speculation about Shubman Gill being ruled out of Test series has spread quickly online. However, the BCCI clarified that Gill hasn’t actually been ruled out yet. He missed India’s warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI as a precaution.
KL Rahul led the side during that 3-day practice fixture instead. Gill injured his right ring finger during a Colombo training session recently. He was struck while batting in the nets and later during a slip-catching drill.
“Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India’s practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress.
KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill’s absence.” BCCI said.
This scare fueled speculation that Shubman Gill ruled out of Test series online.
What This Means for India vs Sri Lanka
The BCCI called his absence from the warm-up a precautionary decision only. Their medical team is reportedly monitoring his recovery closely before the series. The opening India vs Sri Lanka Test begins on August 15 in Galle.
That gives Gill more than a week to recover fully beforehand. The second Test follows in Colombo, starting on August 23 as scheduled. If Gill can’t recover in time, Devdutt Padikkal looks like the likely replacement.
India’s Growing List of Injury Concerns
India already face several other injury worries ahead of this Test series overall. Auqib Nabi has replaced injured pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the squad. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also currently unavailable.
Washington Sundar will miss the first Test due to a hamstring issue. Sai Sudharsan remained in Bengaluru while recovering from a minor big-toe problem. He’s since resumed batting and is reportedly making good progress in training.
Backup Options If More Players Are Ruled Out
If both Gill and Sudharsan miss the opener, India could turn elsewhere. Sarfaraz Khan is considered the most likely reserve batting option available. Several net bowlers have also joined the squad ahead of this important series.
For now, Gill’s final status depends entirely on medical clearance closer to game day.
