The Indian Premier League (IPL) has recently confirmed their retention rules for 2025 season. The deadline for the IPL teams to submit their final list of retained players is 5 PM IST, 31 October . This deadline is a critical step towards the 2025 auction where teams will strategize between retaining key players and making new acquisitions.
Retention Rules and Purse Deductions
For IPL 2025 franchises can retain up to five capped players, with specific purse deductions based on the number of players retained. The retention slabs are as follows:
For the first three retentions: INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore.
For the next two retentions: INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore.
If a franchise retains five capped players and one uncapped player before the auction, a total of INR 79 crore will be deducted from the teamโs purse of INR 120 crore, leaving INR 41 crore to spend at the auction. Teams retaining four capped players and two uncapped players will have INR 69 crore deducted from their purse.
The salary cap for uncapped players remains unchanged from the 2021 mega auction with INR 4 crore being deducted for each uncapped player retained.
Impact Player Rule to Stay Until 2027
Despite opposition from certain franchises and top players, including Indiaโs captain Rohit Sharma, the IPL has decided to extend the controversial Impact Player rule for three more seasons, keeping it in place until 2027.
Introduced in 2023 the Impact Player rule has sparked debate with critics arguing it disrupts the development of all-rounders. However during a meeting on July 31st attended by team owners and key officials – the majority of franchises supported the rule citing its ability to add tactical depth to the game.
