Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered their worst nightmare at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The crushing defeat left them completely embarrassed on multiple fronts completely. But their captain’s troubles didn’t end with just the match result.

Pat Cummins Fined Rs 12 Lakh for Slow Over Rate
IPL officials slapped Pat Cummins with a massive Rs 12 lakh fine. The SRH captain violated the slow over rate rules during the GT match. This specifically breached Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
The penalty marks SRH’s first such offence this IPL 2026 season. First violations bring standard fines, but repeat offences get progressively harsher penalties. Pat Cummins must ensure better time management in the remaining matches now.
Slow over rate issues have plagued several captains this season frustratingly. Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane also faced similar fines earlier. IPL takes these violations seriously to maintain entertainment value for fans.
The fine adds financial pain to an already miserable day for SRH. Losing badly hurts enough without adding Rs 12 lakh penalties afterward. Pat Cummins probably didn’t even realize the over rate problem during the chaos.
SRH’s Historic Humiliation Against GT
GT batted first posting 168/5 in their 20 overs allocated. That total looked decent but chaseable on the Ahmedabad pitch honestly. Nobody expected what happened next in SRH’s batting innings though.
SRH collapsed spectacularly getting bowled out for just 86 runs. They lasted only 14.5 overs before losing all wickets embarrassingly. That 82-run margin became their heaviest IPL defeat ever by runs.
The previous worst was an 80-run loss against KKR last season. SRH chased 201 then but managed only 120 at least. This time, they couldn’t even reach triple figures batting second.
That score of 86 marks SRH’s lowest total in the entire IPL history. Their previous lowest was 96 against Mumbai Indians back in 2019. Breaking your own worst record never feels good for any team.
Pat Cummins’ Response to the Defeat
After the match, Pat Cummins spoke briefly about the humiliating loss calmly. He accepts it simply without making excuses. That philosophical approach shows experienced captaincy despite the pain inside probably.
“This happens in T20 cricket. We (now) go to venues we know well, so we take confidence from that. We won five or six (matches) and that gives a bit of breathing room, so going back to what got us those wins and putting this behind quickly,” said Cummins.
SRH faces CSK at Chepauk on Monday, May 18. They need to bounce back quickly from this embarrassment urgently. The slow over rate fine becomes just another problem to solve.
IPL 2026 keeps throwing challenges at teams in unexpected ways constantly.
