The pitches have changed dramatically over recent years for batters. Steve Smith’s warning to England that their ‘Bazball’ approach might fail here. Australian conditions are completely different from back home for them.

Why Steve Smith Warns England About Tricky Conditions

Australian pitches have become seam-bowling friendly in recent years. Steve Smith explained that batting has gotten much harder. The top-order batters struggle the most on these surfaces. Since the Ashes 2025-26 preparation started, conditions look tougher than ever.

“The conditions are going to be different here in Australia, aren’t they?’ I think the last three or four years have probably been as challenging for batters as we have seen for a long time, particularly the top order,” Smith said.

“So in those conditions, the bowlers are very experienced and very good, and it’s going to make it hard work for the batters. It is going to be tricky for all batters, but when you are trying to get after it, it’s going to be exceptionally hard,” he added.

England plays aggressive cricket with their ‘Bazball’ style, usually. But Smith suggests that England’s approach won’t work easily here. The last few years have tested every batter’s skills.

Average runs per dismissal dropped significantly for the top seven batters. Smith knows these conditions inside out from experience.

England’s Bazball vs Australian Reality Check

England has enjoyed success with ‘Bazball’ cricket globally since 2022. Their batters averaged better numbers during this era overall. But Ashes 2025-26 presents a completely different challenge for them.

Australian pitches won’t allow easy run-scoring like English conditions. Steve Smith sends warning that England must adapt their game. Travis Head has been exceptional at home recently, though. He averages 54.64 with six centuries in Australian conditions.

His success shows what’s possible with proper technique here. Even Smith’s average has declined in recent years. He remains crucial for the Ashes opener despite form concerns.
