Scheduling clashes between leagues and national duties keep creating tough choices for players. The ECB has now made a clear decision on one such clash. Here is everything you need to know about this decision.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and England Stars Get ECB Approval
The ECB will let selected players complete their WPL commitments in India. This applies even if those players miss some England international matches.
The decision prioritizes franchise commitments and the benefits of competing in WPL playoffs. The ECB believes high-pressure playoff matches will help players prepare for the 2027 T20 Champions Trophy.
The Schedule Clash Behind This Decision
WPL 2027 will run from January 14 to February 7, 2027. England Women will play three T20Is against Sri Lanka Women in Pallekele. These matches take place on February 1, 3 and 5. These overlapping dates mean some players may miss Sri Lanka tour for WPL 2027.
Players whose franchises reach the playoffs could miss some or all of the T20I series. The overlap creates a genuine challenge for both franchise teams and national selectors.
Nat Sciver-Brunt has been retained by Mumbai Indians for the next season. Lauren Bell has also been retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the league. Sophie Ecclestone has been retained by UP Warriorz in the same way.
All three may stay in India if their WPL commitments require it.
Most England Players Choose International Duty
Only two English players, Sophia Dunkley and Kira Chathli, have entered the October 28 auction. Most of their England teammates have chosen to prioritize the Sri Lanka tour instead.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and Mithali Ayodhya have also entered the auction. If selected, they may also need to adjust their schedules for competing commitments.
Past Precedents and the Champions Trophy Move
In 2024, Ecclestone, Sciver-Brunt, Capsey and Wyatt-Hodge arrived late for England’s New Zealand series. Their late arrival happened because of WPL commitments, showing this clash is an ongoing challenge.
The ICC moved the Women’s T20 Champions Trophy to India after government interference concerns in Sri Lanka. It now runs from February 14 to 28, 2027, instead of June and July.
Fans will now watch how Nat Sciver-Brunt and England stars balance league and country duties.
